BBQ-ing in Uncertain Weather

I have a weakness…

I have a weakness for Mongolian BBQ that must be satisfied at least every couple of weeks.  This is more of a problem since I moved from Mongolia to Thailand, as the city I live in now – Chiang Mai – doesn’t have any Mongolian barbecue restaurants.

I have to make do instead with whatever I can find.  Barbecue is pretty common around here, and I can usually find enough of the correct ingredients to make a decent effort at Mongolian barbecue.

The only problem with barbecuing, though, is the unpredictable Chiang Mai weather.  In countries with stable weather I imagine it would be no problem at all – you just wait for a sunny day, set up your BBQ and you’re all set.  Here in Chiang Mai, though, it’s a little more difficult.  The Chiang Mai weather turns so often that it’s hard to know what the weather will be like from hour to hour.  One minute the skies is clear and the sun is shining, and the next minute it’s raining cats and dogs.  This is all thanks to the monsoon season that drops heavy, brief rain showers on the city at all hours of the day, and it won’t last much longer, thank God, but until the wet season ends in November my BBQ-ing will be severely curtailed.

It’s a shame, actually, that I didn’t research the Chiang Mai weather before moving to the city.  I kind of imagined that the weather was always nice in Thailand, and I didn’t count on there being a long part of the year when the weather is terrible (or such a large part of the year when I’d need natural mosquito repellent).  Now I’m stuck in a country where I get rained on for six months of the year and boiled alive for the other six months.

Still, it’s better than working, right?  I just wish I’d taken some travel advice for Asia and bought some Listerine mosquito repellent before I decided to move.
