Expert barbecue chefs make everything look easy, but the truth lies somewhere in between. While experienced makes your routine a bit more predictable, you still have to be organized to get results. Just throwing food onto a grill and hoping for the best isn’t going to cut it these days. If you plan on entertaining a large group of people, you have to know what you’re doing. Unfortunately, there are far too many people adopting lazy methods without giving their guests a true barbecue experience. It’s important to aim for quality and take the time necessary to learn from your mistakes. Backyard grilling is an art form, and to look at it as anything less would be a disservice to one of the best American traditions around. If you’re ready to take barbecue seriously and become a master yourself, here are some of the major mistakes to avoid.
The first mistake people make tends to be at the very beginning when they don’t plan properly. People can find themselves overwhelmed or dealing with a chaotic cooking experience if they are prepared. You should sit down and plan your menu carefully and make sure you have a comprehensive list of all the ingredients you need. If you’re going to be throwing a grand feast, this isn’t something you plan the day of the meal. You should have every contingency covered in addition to a few backup plans as well.
Knowing your grill is one of the keys to successful barbecue cooking so make sure that you familiarize yourself with your equipment. A lot of people don’t fully understand each and every feature that comes with modern grills these days. It’s not just about turning it on and pumping up the heat. Each barbecue has special elements that make it unique, and you need experience to become familiar with whatever grill you’re working with. Make sure it’s properly assembled and clean as thoroughly before you even think about putting food on top of it.
If you’re thinking about using frozen food, then you’re about to commit one of the biggest sins in the world of authentic barbecue. Real grilling is not about pulling a bunch of burgers out of a bag. Stay away from frozen chicken wings or anything that comes prepackaged for your convenience. Whenever you save in time you will eventually sacrifice in terms of taste. Using these types of ingredients is no way to impress people, and almost everyone deserves better. Use fresh ingredients all the way through and take the time to find fresh local produce and great cuts of quality meat, and make your own barbecue sauce recipe if you have time.
In order to successfully cook on gas grills, you need a good combination of patients while paying attention at all times. Remember, cooking is a scientific process at the core. If you don’t leave your food on long enough, it won’t heat to the right temperature. Flipping food around or constantly cutting into your meat to see if it’s done is a huge mistake you should avoid. Have the patience to let your food comfortably grill until it’s ready to turn over once. You never have to flip your food any more than that, and you should use your sense of touch in sight to tell when something is done. You should also plan things properly so that you have enough time to let your food set before you serve it up to your guests. With the addition of delectable side dishes and you should be able to come up with a culinary experience that people will be talking about for weeks.
If you are having a party, whether it is a BBQ, or any other type of party, you really need to think of something a bit special. You could do this by either thinking of a theme for your party, say carnival, and get your guests to dress up in some really great carnival costumes, or simply by thinking of a really great, eye catching centre piece.
Or if you are feeling really creative you could do both, and theme your evening, this would include your guests dressing up in their carnival costumes, and making the food just as colourful.
This is just one example of nice, original, colourful and tasty food. More ideas would be to use red, yellow and green peppers to create skewers, or any other vegetables, or fruit. Spices can also be used to make the food more interesting in both looks and flavour, don’t be afraid to experiment, though perhaps a trial run may be a good idea if you are trying something new.
Add to the atmosphere with decorations and outdoor lighting to match your theme, and you can guarantee that people will be talking about your BBQ for a long time to come.
Our favorite place to eat meal is definitely outside around the grill. Every time its just a little bit to hot or a guest comes by we find ourselves around the grill.
So when we started our kitchen renovation we knew that we should repurpose some items and make an outdoor living space that centered around the grill.
Our design included a combination firepit and bbq with a section for food prep and tools. As our design grew, we had no issues with materials, since we were using reclaimed items from inside and local field stone that was already scattered around the garden.
It made sense to have a spot to keep drinks and grill items chilled, we could have made a dedicated icebox, but since we were running gas lines anyway we figured why not run electrical and have a full fridge rather than have to always fill with ice.
So we began our search for fridges that could be worked into our current design plan. With the selection we had it was no problem getting a model that would work.
We struggled with whether the fridge should be easily removable and decided that it should be. Figured its better for cleaning or repurposing during the worst of the winter months, although we still plan on using it in the winter since the large firepit easily warms the area if given some time to burn before coming out to cook.
When using a Bradley Smoker, how many Bradley Smoker Bisquettes are actually needed?
When using a Bradley Smoker, how many Bradley Smoker Bisquettes are actually needed? It says that each Bisquette burns for 20 minutes. But does that mean that a Bisquette should always be burning throughout the process? Let’s say I need to smoke the meat for 8 hours, does that mean I need to use 24 Bisquettes? On the Bradley smoker website, people make it seem as though you suppose to have a Bisquette burning constantly. However, when I read about other smokers, I’m instructed not to put too make wood chips, otherwise there would be too much smoke flavored. I’m not familiar with how strong these bradley Bisquettes are, so I’m not sure if other smoker rules apply. Hopefully I can get some feedback from those that own a bradley smoker. Thanks
When I smoke meats on my Bradley I start the unit pre heat it for about 20 minutes.I then add the meat and let the meat reach about 160 degrees for the remainder of the first hour.I then add enough bisquettes for 1/2 smoke time of my total .If I want to leave the meat in 6 hrs I use only 9 bisquettes.Remember your smoker retains smoke flavor from previous cookings.Don’t over clean your unit.Just the food racks , element and temp probe.Smoking meats is an easy way to cook and experiment with your own touch added.
To be sure the meat is fully cooked I finish it off in the oven for another half hour at 300 degrees.
pecan , mesquite and hickory bisquettes are my favorites and I will mix them up in the stack.Try making Jerky as well.
There is such a thing as a free lunch
Just how much do you want a free meal? Will a 12000 BTU burner bring 6 gallons of water to a rolling boil in a stainless steel 10 gal stockpot?
Yes it will. Not super fast though. You are better off with a higher BTU burner if you have the option. Like 48,000 or 64,000. But, what you referenced will work….if you don’t watch the pot!
Should I simply repair my propane grill or replace it?
We have a BBQ Grillware GGPL-2100 that is almost 4 years old. It is one of the cheapest grills that lowes sells and that’s what attracted my grandmother to it. I find that we really got what she paid for when it comes to quality. The biggest issue is the rust. The drip pan and the grease collector are both rusted out. I looked up replacement parts and it would cost about $80 to replace the 2 parts. I am also having trouble with the electric ignition and the burners. I looked up online for spare parts and they are pretty hard to find.
What would be the most intelligent course of action?
I would simply retire that grill, its not worth the price of the parts to get it up to par again. The price of grills has come down somewhat in the last couple of years and you would surely enjoy having one that is in good working order. You may also want to get one with at least one or two side burners. These really come in handy when you are cooking out.
How can i make a firepit in my backyard that looks cool…w/ cobblestone or some nice looking stone.?
i want to use it for bbq’n and just throwing some logs on it.
I agree that you need to find stone that will accept the heat. Many people dig into the ground when making a firepit but I find that it traps water and smells after a while. I like to mound the dirt up a bit so the water drains off.

how do I change my old gas grill into a charcoal grill?
I have an old gas grill with a bad switch. I want to use charcoal in it but wanted to know if there’s any parts I need to disconnect first. There is no tank attached.
Remove all gas associated parts. You need to block all the air holes in the bottom of the grill. I used a piece of sheet metal and bent it to fit. I put some clean sand on top of the sheet metal to hold it in place. After a few uses it will keep it’s shape by itself. Home Depot has small sheets that you can trim to fit and it’s easy to shape. I love it. Food tastes better, and no flair up’s
